Our Story

At Farm at 1386, we believe outdoor spaces deserve the same beauty and care as the inside of your home. After retiring from a career in healthcare, our owner, Doreen Grzelak, and her husband returned to the family farm where Doreen grew up in southern Delaware. With deep roots in a Mennonite community—and Amish heritage on her mother’s side—quilting has always been a part of Doreen’s life. As she fondly recalls, “Quilting was in my DNA.”

From Fabric to Barn Quilts

Doreen began by sewing traditional quilts, but soon found a new passion in painting barn quilts for outdoor buildings on the farm. Initially, she used pressure-treated plywood—but it was heavy and didn’t hold up well to the elements. That led her to discover aluminum composite material: lightweight, durable, and perfect for outdoor art.

Our Crafts

Every barn quilt at Farm at 1386 is thoughtfully crafted to ensure lasting quality and beauty. Each piece is:

  • Built on a durable metal composite base.
  • Primed with adhesive specifically designed for metal surfaces.
  • Painted with multiple coats of high-quality exterior paint.
  • Sealed with protective polyurethane for UV and weather resistance.

This careful process ensures each quilt maintains its color, strength, and charm for years to come.
